I have been riding motorcycles since a teenager and non stop up through and too now. Older(57)and kids gone and pets passed on, me and my wife ride long distances together often since 2007. So far we have ridden to Nova Scotia/San Diego,CA/ Marble Falls,Ark/Ocracoke Island,NC/Pigeon Forge,TN/Kill Devil Hills,NC/Key West,FL to name a few places.
In 2007 I updated my older iron from a 1997 Buel S2T,1963 rigid Pan and 1983 FLHS to a 2001 Ultra and 1998 Ultra w/ sidecar.
We prefer the Harley Davidson Ultra because of the passenger comfort for my wife and ample storage not to mention amenities like cruise,AM/FM/CD/CB radio and rider to passenger commo capacities. It took a while to get use to the windshield, it made me feel claustrophobic. And the dealership network in the lower 48 is excellent as the place en route riders as a priority.
I read and thoroughly enjoyed your piece on the Alaskan highway because we are planning that ride for 2014. Reading your story makes us wonder if the Ultra will be an okay selection given some of the dicey road surfaces you've mentioned. You buy your ticket and take your chances, right?
